ChemCheemi is collaborating with Technovation Girls, a global non-governmental organization that empowers girls ages 8–18 to become leaders, creators and problem-solvers through technology and entrepreneurship. Together with local partners, volunteer mentors and parents, we want to reach and impact more girls from underserved areas.

About the programme

What is Technovation Girls?

Technovation Girls is an international technology and entrepreneurship education program that equips young women ages 8–18 with the skills they need to become tech entrepreneurs and leaders.

With support from volunteer mentors, girls work in teams to develop technology projects that address and solve real-world challenges in their community. They learn programming basics to build a phone app or AI prototype, and learn how to pitch and market their idea.

Created in 2009 in Silicon Valley, United States, Technovation Girls has reached girls in more than 100 countries.

Get involved

Two ways to join the movement

Join a team as a student, or guide one as a mentor. No coding experience is needed to start.

Students · ages 8–18

Participate as a Student

As part of Technovation Girls, your team will:

  • Identify a problem in your community and explore problems teams have solved in past seasons.
  • Learn how to code an app and train AI models to solve that problem, with support from your mentor. You don’t need to know how to code to participate!
  • Take part if you are between 8 and 18 years old by August 1 of the season.
  • Pre-register and we will send you everything you need to join a Technovation team.

Be a Mentor

As a Technovation Girls team mentor, you will:

  • Work with a team of 1–5 girls for 4+ months, spending roughly 40 hours helping them develop their ideas (about 2 hours per week).
  • Recruit and support teams of girls as they create apps that solve community problems.
  • Coordinate meeting times with your teams.
  • You don’t need to be a technology professional, just comfortable saying “I don’t know, let’s find out together.”

The season

Technovation Girls Tanzania events

Special events that support our teams from kickoff to the big pitch and celebration.

  1. Early – mid January

    Virtual Kickoff Event

    Meet the Technovation Leadership Team, learn more about the project, and meet other participants.

  2. Mid – end of February

    Project workshop

    A one-day workshop in a meetup space or school to help girls with their projects, meet other teams in the area, and get to know the Technovation Leadership Team.

  3. Late March – early April

    Final touches workshop

    Another one-day workshop to help girls add the final touches and make sure their projects are ready to submit.

  4. May

    Pitch Event

    This is the big day! Teams present their projects to a panel of judges, and national winners are selected from the Junior Division (ages 13–15) and the Senior Division (ages 16–18).

  5. Late July – early August

    TVN Annual Event

    Every team that completed its project and pitched at the national Pitch Event, plus our stakeholders, celebrates the hard work together, learns how to keep going in entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership and technology, and has fun!
